In December of 1996, Julie and her husband were stationed in Okinawa Japan while her husband was serving in the United States Air Force. She took a part-time job as a scuba diver with a local tourist company that would take tourist out to sea on a passenger submarine to explore sea life. Julie’s life would dramatically change forever when while diving at 80 feet, both of her hands were pulled into the propeller of the submarine amputating the right hand above the wrist and significantly damaging the left wrist, thumb, and hand. Following the accident and once she was in a stable condition, she was flown back to United States for a team of doctors to perform a remarkable reconstruction. Since the left hand and wrist were badly damaged, Julie and her doctors decided her best chance of rehabilitation was to transplant the three remaining fingers from the left hand onto her right hand. Her right wrist was undamaged and her right thumb was fused in a functional position. Currently, she is fit with a below the elbow myo-electric prosthesis on the left side.

Today, she lives with her husband and three children and maintains an active, and independent lifestyle. Her husband is an airline pilot, and Julie is able to care for herself, her children, and their busy household independently while he is away. Although her right hand has undergone significant damage and surgical reconstruction, she relies heavily on her prosthesis as her dominant hand to accomplish daily activities such as laundry, housekeeping, driving, etc. required to maintain a busy household. Most of all, Julie is a very active, “hands-on”, mother of three children and is very involved in all their school, sports, and social activities.
