WCR Scoliosis Bracing
The Wood Cheneau Rigo brace is a thermoplastic scoliosis brace fabricated from a hyper-corrected positive model of the patient. The design of the WCR brace includes multiple three-point pressure systems and significant pressure and expansion areas, providing correction in all three anatomical planes. Alternating areas of pressure and relief in the WCR brace encourage dynamic curve correction, as patients rotate away from pressure areas and into expansion areas with each breath.
The WCR brace is hand-modified and fabricated by Grant Wood, CO. Each patient’s curve type is classified based on the patient’s x-rays and clinical photos. Dr. Rigo is personally consulted on challenging WCR brace cases for verification of the patient’s curve classification and scoliosis brace design. This multi-disciplinary approach involving the patient, their family, physicians, Schroth therapists, and orthotists optimizes patient results.
Studies have demonstrated that the Rigo brace and Cheneau brace both improve and stabilize the deformity.1-2 Grant Wood found in his 2003 thesis that the Cheneau brace led to decreased lateral deviation, vertebral rotation, and major cobb angles at the termination of orthotic treatment. A 2017 study found that “Patients treated with RCOs compared with Boston-style TLSOs had similar baseline characteristics and brace wear time, yet significantly lower rates of spinal surgery.”3 The Wood Cheneau Rigo maximizes the patient’s chances of orthotic success, while maintaining a sleek, low-profile design that encourages compliance.
During her residency, Baker Orthotist/Prosthetist Megan Glahn worked directly under Grant Wood at Align Clinic and received her WCR Certification. Her time with Grant has equipped her with the tools and knowledge needed to provide WCR braces and uphold their prestigious reputation. Megan has a background in coaching competitive gymnastics and enjoys coaching her patients through the bracing process. She is particularly interested in the psychological side of bracing, which is the focus of her research.
